Russia, which once had open and free internet, is now reeling under the Kremlin’s stifling censorship. Moscow has been seeking to strengthen its censorship, considered the most ambitious after China. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who had once called the internet a ‘CIA project,’ considers the web as a threat to his power.

The govt tightly controls television but open and free internet has made it difficult for Kremlin to censor content. Surveillance systems reportedly monitor people’s online activities, and some bloggers have been arrested. According to reports, Russia installed black boxes in the systems, that linked back to the command centres in Moscow.
