The future remains uncertain for many women in the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan. Female teachers have been prevented from returning to work and female students are barred from resuming their secondary education, leaving primary schools the only ones that remain open for girls. On October 9, 2021, the US and the Taliban kicked off talks in Qatar – their first since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August. US officials said the meeting would be used to press the Taliban to respect women’s rights, form an inclusive government and allow humanitarian agencies to operate.
